I have always loved my kitchen, but I wanted to do something to make it feel a bit more open and airy. I knew I wanted to add a section of glass front cabinets.
So, I did a little research. I learned that the type of cabinet door I had was going to be easy to alter. It is essentially a panel that is put into the frame. I am using my own terms, which are not that of a cabinet maker and probably completely wrong. So for all of you other normal people out there, I made this very scientific (ha) visual to try to help explain it.
Before I started doing any demo to the cabinet doors, I took them all off of the hinges and set it up the way I would like it. I wanted to make sure I liked the balance of the items and that I would be able to comfortably keep it looking this way. They are the dishes we use every day. (See? Once you KonMarie, it’s easy to fit everything!)
Once I was set on loving it, it was time to tear my cabinet doors apart. I was a little nervous, I won’t lie, but went for it.
Basically, all I needed to do was get that panel out of the frame and cut the back of the cabinet around the panel. In other words, turn it into the exact way a picture frame looks from behind. To do this, I used a router and cut (from behind the door) around the panel, into the outer frame. Once that part was removed, I simply lifted the panel out. It was that easy.
I found a glass company to cut pieces for me specific to my measurements. The cost? $60 for 4 pieces. My mind was blown. I laid the glass into the “frame” and put silicone all around the edge of the glass and the frame. I added little metal fasteners to make sure that nothing would budge. This is the fastener I used: fastener.
I honestly cannot believe how easy it was. You can easily do this in a weekend.
I also wanted to clear the counters of EVERYTHING. I knew I needed to have my knives handy and didn’t want the bulky, dust collecting knife block anymore. So I found this handy magnetic holder. It is amazing! You can find it here: knife holder. To keep the look streamlined, I put only knives on it and put the other utensils in a drawer. Because there is nothing on the counter where I cook, my kitchen is now 80 times easier and faster to clean.
